So, we needed to introduce some vocabulary about the topic and this clear and easy ppt. Hope you find it useful for your lessons.

Why do some leaves change their color in Autumn?

Every Autumn in all the forests of the world, there is a miraculous change in the color of the leaves. They turn from green into brilliant shades of yellow, orange, red, and gold. Sometimes you can see several shades on the same leaf. But why are these color changes happening, and what is going on in the plant?
Read this explanation and you will understand!
Plants make their own food. They take water from the ground through their roots. They take a gas called carbon dioxide from the air. They turn water and carbon dioxide into food using sunlight and something called chlorophyll. This one is green. It gives leaves their green color.

Winter days are short and dry. Many plants stop making food in Autumn. Then, the chlorophyll goes away. Then we can see different colours as orange, yellow, red, gold and also brown. When they are brown, it comes from wastes left in the leaves.

Earth Day Celebration

We'll celebrate the Earth Day tomorrow !
Each year, Earth Day — April 22 — marks the anniversary of what many consider the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970.

What does it mean? It means that people around the world are becoming more and more conscious of the urgent need to reduce pollution and save the environment every day.
Earth Day is not just a celebration, it is a call for action!
But...what can we do? Last School year children concluded that there are lots of things we can do at the school and also at home.
Here you have some of the main ideas they said:
  • To take shorter showers.
  • To turn off the tap while you are brushing your teeth.
  • To turn the lights off when you are not using a room.
  • To walk or cycle more.
  • To take public transport.
  • To reduce plastic.
  • To reuse more.

Tomorrow we will talk about this celebration and we'll decide some more actions.
By the way, I want to share with you this green memory game. I hope you like it!

Air pressure on water

Hi you all!
Last week was the Water's Week in our school and we had different workshops working on that topic.
CM graders learnt that the air around us has weight, and it presses against everything it touches. That pressure is called atmospheric pressure, or air pressure.

We started with  old and empty bottles, hammering a hole in a side of each bottle. Then we put a drinking straw through each hole.
Children discovered, when they filled them with water, and put the lids on, the water stoppped pouring through the straw, because air wasn't getting into the bottles, and couldn't pushing down the water. Otherwise, when they unscrewed the caps, the water was pouring ! It was fun and they enjoyed a lot. They talked about they had made a fountain with a tap.

STEPS
If you're a kid who is trying to do this experiment, get an adult to help you make a hole in the bottle. I don't want to hurt yourself! You have to make the hole on a side of the bottle, close to the bottom.
Put a drinking straw through the hole you have just made it. Fill the bottle with water all the way to the half bottle. Screw on the cap. What's happen? Hey, there's no leak!

Slowly unscrew the cap and watch what happens. Are you ready for the water to come rushing out?

EXTRA INFORMATION: Atmospheric pressure is commonly measured with a barometer. In a barometer, a column of mercury in a glass tube rises or falls as the weight of the atmosphere changes. Meteorologists describe the atmospheric pressure by how high the mercury rises.
